Copenhagen Participatory Research Project

What happens when young women are invited into the design process?
Delivered in collaboration with Make Space for Girls and local partners in Copenhagen, this workshop explored how parks and public spaces could better support the needs of teenage girls. Through mapping exercises, mood boards and facilitated discussions, participants shared their experiences of public space, highlighting what makes places feel welcoming, comfortable and worth spending time in.
The project revealed both shared concerns and notable cultural differences between Denmark and the UK, offering valuable insights into how context shapes experiences of inclusion, safety and belonging.
The findings contribute to Echo's ongoing research into gender-sensitive urban design and inform the wider Cities for Her research project, which explores how public spaces can better support girls and young women.
